Our Story &
Our Mission
For over 18 years, Triangle Empowerment Center has been a beacon of hope, health, and inclusion for LGBTQ+ communities and underserved populations across the Triangle area of North Carolina.
Year TEC was Founded
Triangle Empowerment Center was founded with a simple but profound belief: every person deserves access to health services, education, and community — regardless of who they are or where they come from.
A Community Built on Empowerment
Triangle Empowerment Center, Inc. (TEC) is a nonprofit community-based organization established in 2008. We are dedicated to addressing minority health disparities and providing comprehensive, culturally competent services to LGBTQ+ individuals, people living with HIV, and underserved communities across Durham, Wake, Orange, and surrounding counties.
We believe that a lack of resources should never be a barrier to living a healthy, empowered life. That's why every single service we offer — from HIV testing and PrEP to housing assistance and support groups — is completely free. No membership fees. No exclusions. You come as you are.
TEC operates as a safe, drug-free, and alcohol-free organization. Our events and programs create spaces where people can connect, learn, and grow — free from judgment and full of support.
Mission, Vision & Values
Empowerment Through Education
"To create a happy, healthy, united community through empowerment and education." We pursue this mission every day through programs designed to lift individuals and strengthen the entire community.
A Healthier, More Equitable Triangle
We envision a Triangle region where every person — regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or HIV status — has equal access to healthcare, housing, and community belonging.
Inclusion, Dignity, Community
We operate with radical inclusion. Nobody is excluded, charged a fee, or judged. We honor the dignity of every person through every interaction — in our offices, in the community, and in our advocacy.
Everyone Is Welcome Here
TEC was founded on radical inclusion. No matter your background, identity, or circumstances — if you need support, our doors are open.
LGBTQ+ Community
We provide a safe, affirming space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning individuals across the Triangle. All identities are welcomed and celebrated.
Black & Minority Communities
TEC was founded to directly address the health disparities faced by Black and minority populations — from higher HIV rates to limited healthcare access — through targeted, culturally competent programs.
People Living with HIV
Our G.E.P. support group and case management services provide ongoing support, resources, and community for HIV-positive individuals at every stage of their journey.
Transgender Individuals
Our L.O.T.T. (Ladies of the T) program offers holistic support including housing assistance, job placement, legal name change guidance, and social connection for the trans community.
Minority Women
Through our "It's All About Me" program, we use CDC's VOICES intervention to empower minority women through education, healthy living, self-sufficiency, and community.
Everyone in Need
If you need help, you are welcome here. TEC has zero barriers to entry — no fees, no exclusions, no judgment. You come as you are.
